At the Melbourne Gaol, criminals who’d been hanged were then decapitated so that a death mask could be made of their heads.  These were used for the study of phrenology to determine if there were markers for criminal behavior.  

 

The woman above was sentenced to death for drowning her 2-year-old in the Yarra River by tying a stone to his body before throwing him into the river.
